Why can't I just put a normal microSD card in a camera?

When is a microSD card actually the right primary storage?

For a single standalone camera with no NVR at all, which is common with WiFi and battery cameras that have nowhere else to write footage. In that setup, the card is not a compromise, it is the only local storage option, and a high endurance card sized generously, with motion only recording enabled rather than continuous, can realistically cover weeks between checks.

Can a microSD card work alongside an NVR?

Yes, and this is one of its better uses: many PoE cameras that connect to an NVR also accept a card as a local backup, so if the network connection to the NVR drops, the camera keeps recording to its own card until the connection returns. That backup role plays to the card's strengths without asking it to be the primary store for a whole system.

Will a regular microSD card work in a security camera?

It will work briefly, then fail. Before you point a camera at anything. Aim cameras at your own property and your own boundary, never into a neighbour's windows or across their garden. Cameras in bedrooms, bathrooms, or anywhere else a person reasonably expects privacy are a serious legal problem, and that includes guests, lodgers and anyone who works in your home.
